| Route Refinements
South America: Economic slowdown diminished the demand for airfreight headed southbound to Latin America, particularly to Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Cargolux now flies three flights instead of five to Latin America each week and we revised routes to accommodate new demand. We stopped carrying fish from Chile to Spain and suspended the Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Recife, Vitoria stops. We disconnected stops in North America (New York and Mexico City) and Africa (Accra and Abidjan) from routes to and from South America. As a result, forwarders in all three regions will experience better traffic coordination and we will achieve better fleet utilization. A Monday flight now operates from Luxembourg to Santiago de Chile, Latacunga, Bogota and back to Luxembourg. This route replaces two others: (1) Luxembourg to Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires and Luxembourg and (2) Luxembourg to New York, Mexico, Latacunga, Bogota and Luxembourg. Most of the cargo we received in Recife originated in southern Brazil where it can be trucked to Rio de Janeiro and flown to Europe more productively. We added a stop in the former Brazilian capital and opened a new export station there. A Tuesday flight now operates from Luxembourg to Viracopos, Curitaba, Rio de Janeiro and Luxembourg. Rio replaced Abidjan in this schedule. The route for Thursday’s flight is unchanged, from Luxembourg to Viracopos, Curitaba, Latacunga, Bogota and Luxembourg. Africa: A new Monday turnaround flight from Luxembourg to Abidjan, Accra and back to Luxembourg now carries the northbound freight that went previously on a flight from South America and gives forwarders in both regions better coordination of their traffic. We replaced Sharjah with Dubai on Tuesday’s flight that now travels from Luxembourg to Beirut, Dubai, Reunion, Nairobi, Maastricht and Luxembourg. Thursday’s flight from Luxembourg to Abidjan, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Maastricht and Luxembourg remains unchanged. Flights on Friday and Sunday from Luxembourg now travel nonstop to Johannesburg and return through Nairobi and Maastricht to Luxembourg. North America: A Saturday turnaround between Luxembourg and Los Angeles now stops in Portland before returning to Luxembourg in order to give forwarders a better operating day from the Pacific Northwest into Europe. A Sunday flight now operates from Luxembourg to Los Angeles, Guadalajara and Luxembourg. It adds much needed frequency in Los Angeles and supports the booming electronics assembly business in Guadalajara. This route replaces one that stopped previously in San Francisco and Portland. A Sunday night flight from Luxembourg to New York, Mexico City now returns directly to Luxembourg. It stopped previously in Latacunga where it sat unproductively for almost a day. Middle East and Asia: A Monday flight from Luxembourg to Shanghai now travels via Baku instead of Dubai. The demand in Baku is growing steadily. This is the fourth weekly service eastbound to the Azeri capital. From Shanghai, the aircraft travels to Bangkok, Baku and Luxembourg. We moved the stop in Dubai to a Tuesday flight from Luxembourg that now travels to Beirut, Dubai, Reunion, Nairobi, Maastricht and Luxembourg. Wednesday’s flight from Singapore and Chennai now stops in Baku on the way to Luxembourg instead of stopping in Abu Dhabi and Budapest. This is the second westbound departure from Baku and was added in response to local demand for more capacity to Europe. It was followed by four more westbound stops on the Shanghai flights in February. We also added a fourth stop in Singapore and moved a stop in Budapest to a Thursday flight from Hong Kong. That aircraft now flies from Singapore to Sharjah, Budapest and Luxembourg. It flew previously from Hong Kong to Bangkok, Sharjah and Luxembourg. Moving the Budapest stop one day enables forwarders to operate from both Hong Kong and Singapore to Luxembourg on Thursday without having to transship in the Middle East and encounter the possibility of the fog delays that prevail during winter. Thursday’s flight from Kuala Lumpur and Taipei now stops in Bangkok and Abu Dhabi on its way to Luxembourg. We dropped the previously route through Fairbanks to Prestwick because there is less activity between Taiwan and Scotland. Much of the high tech gear now flies instead to Eastern Europe. |
