Cargolux Connects With Budapest

Cargolux Airlines is set to introduce regular air cargo flights between the Hungarian capital Budapest and Luxembourg on 2 April 2002. The B747-400 freighter flights operate three times per week, arriving in Budapest on Sunday evening from Hong Kong and Singapore, on Tuesday morning from Hong Kong and Bangkok, and on Friday morning from Singapore and Madras. With these services, Cargolux offers customers in Hungary a faster shipping alternative to the more common trucking services. The new regional Cargolux office in Vienna, in charge of Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and all other Eastern European countries, uses these services as a major distribution hub to all Eastern European capitals. A speedy airport-to-airport and airport-to-door-service has been set up as a response to growing demands for this kind of service.

In the last five years, Hungary has developed a thriving high-tech industry. The government created a free trade zone at Székesfehévár, near Budapest, that has attracted many western computer, telecommunications and consumer electronic companies. Automotive companies, such as Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Volvo and others, have also established production facilities in Hungary. With a worth of EUR 7 billion, electronic goods account for 25% of all exports. Experts estimate that electronics exports will overtake automotive goods as the number one export item within the next five years.

Cargolux has contracted handling company Budapest Airport R.T. to handle its flights at Budapest Ferihegy Airport. Budapest Airport's warehouse is able to handle 50,000 tons annually. Authorities have approved a warehouse expansion to 150,000 tons, which is expected to be completed within the next 16 months.
