1974 - Cargolux taking over the Loftleiðir Maintenance

In January 1974, the Maintenance & Engineering Department of Loftleiðir Icelandic in Luxembourg was incorporated into Cargolux. Overnight the Cargolux staff increased from 80 to 180.

During the Loftleiðir operation, the main maintenance base for the CL-44 aircraft was in New York under the control of Loftleiðir personnel. After Cargolux took over Loftleiðir’s CL-44 aircraft, it was decided that, in order to ensure reliable worldwide operation of the aircraft and to provide acceptable service to its customers, the main maintenance base for the CL-44 would be established in Luxembourg. The maintenance equipment and manpower support was transferred from New York to Luxembourg and Loftleiðir was made responsible for the maintenance organization.
