1977 - Cargolux goes Jumbo

December 1977 saw Cargolux taking a giant leap: the decision to purchase a Boeing 747-200F freighter.

On 30 January 1979, Cargolux firmly underlined its dedication as a major all cargo airline, when the first B747 freighter, LX-DCV, was delivered. At that time, it was the only European all-cargo airline to operate this type of equipment. On 2 February 1979, the aircraft was christened by the Mayor of Luxembourg City, Mrs. Colette Flesch, in the presence of HRH Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg. The aircraft entered service on 5 February 1979.

In September 1979, Cargolux took up its option to purchase a second Boeing 747-200 freighter. The new aircraft, registered LX-ECV, was delivered to Cargolux in October 1980. It had an increased payload compared to the first one, due to the lighter and more fuel efficient engines and increased maximum take off weight.
